NYPC Statement on Reporters Removal from “The Shack” at 1 Police Plaza

Debra Toppeta, president of the New York Press Club, released the following statement today in response to the NYPD’s announcement that reporters covering the Police Department would no longer be provided with space inside 1 Police Plaza, but will be relocated to trailers outside the building:
“The NYPD’s reversal of a policy that has been in place for more than 125 years is antithetical to the First Amendment rights of journalists in New York City and everywhere. Journalists from major news outlets have been able to monitor breaking news at New York City’s Police Department headquarters since early in the last century, dating back to President Theodore Roosevelt’s time as NYC Police Commissioner.

“This access has led to the coverage of thousands of stories affecting millions of New Yorkers, protecting them from crime, fires and countless other dangerous situations, including explosions and terrorist incidents like the 9/11 attacks. Without being informed immediately about the perils that may confront them, journalists and all New Yorkers are at loss. We call on the NYPD and Mayor Adams to reinstate the reporter’s room, long known as “The Shack,” at 1 Police Plaza immediately.”
