NY Press Club Statement on AP’s Removal from White House Access
Removing Associated Press access to the Oval Office and Air Force One is a miscarriage of justice on multiple levels. It is first and foremost a violation of the organization’s First Amendment rights and should be reversed immediately.
Beyond that, the AP is the premier provider of news to media outlets throughout the U.S. and the world. Without the AP present at Oval Office events and presidential trips, there will be a news void, potentially one that will tip the scales, allowing a bias to news outlets not as impartial as one that has been delivering news without partiality for almost 200 years.
We call on all media outlets and anyone interested in the First Amendment to express opposition to this unconstitutional move so the AP’s access to critical executive branch functions is restored.
