Join the New York Press Club at the Craig Newmark Graduate Schoool of Journalism at CUNY on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, in conversation with Dan Harris, co-anchor on the weekend edition of “Good Morning America” on ABC News.

Dan Harris used to think that meditation was for people who collect crystals, play Ultimate Frisbee, and use the word “namaste” without irony. After he had a panic attack on live television, he went on a strange and circuitous journey that ultimately led him to become one of meditation’s most vocal public proponents.

In addition to his role as co-anchor on the weekend edition of “Good Morning America,” he also regularly files reports for “Nightline,” “World News Tonight with David Muir,” “20/20,” “Good Morning America,” ABC News Digital and ABC News Radio. Previously, he anchored “World News Sunday” and “Nightline.”

In 2014, Harris published the book “10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress without Losing My Edge and Found Self-Help That Actually Works.” It went to #1 on the New York Times Bestsellers List and then became an app, designed to teach meditation to skeptics, and a podcast, talking with smart people about whether there’s anything beyond 10%. In 2017, Harris published a follow-up New York Times best-selling book “Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-To Book.”

The discussion will be led by Lesley Alderman, who is a psychotherapist, journalist and former yoga teacher. Lesley helped launch the Patient Money column for the New York Times and has been a frequent contributor to the paper’s Well section. She was a deputy editor at Real Simple and a staff writer at Money magazine.

Currently, she writes about mental health for a variety of local and national publications. She devotes most of her time, though, to her psychotherapy practice, where she works with adults and couples. Her practice is grounded in the belief that all of us have the potential to change and grow into better, more satisfied versions of ourselves. After hours, she’s a devoted yogi and an intermittent meditator.

Join us for pizza and beverages at 6:30 p.m., followed by a conversation with Dan Harris and Lesley Alderman starting at 7 p.m.

Join the NYPC as it delves into journalism, anxiety and mindfulness with Dan Harris, Emmy Award winner and recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award. Harris will talk with the audience about the app, book and podcast he created.
